Los Angeles is a great place to be for Halloween! One of the many great events going on is the 12th “ El Dia De Los Muertos” at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery on October 22.
The event will focus on paying homage to the dearly departed in traditional Mexican ceremonies and attendees are encouraged to wear Calaca or other Dia de Los Muertos apparel. This year’s event will feature Astrid Hadad and international musical icon Ruben Albarran, lead singer of Café Tacvba as live entertainment. For more information on Astrid Hadad, click here. There will also be plenty of delicious Mexican food on available to enjoy as the cemetery comes alive. Children will especially enjoy the storytelling through art, face painting, dancing, and musical instruments available to celebrate and teach about this commemorative holiday.
Guests are invited to create an altar for “El Dia de Los Muertos” at the cemetery for prizes up to $3000. The altars are the soul of the event and often revolve around offerings, nature elements such as earth, wind, water and fire, incense, marigold flowers, skulls, and of course pictures of the deceased. Creators are encouraged to start their altars the evening prior, on Friday starting at 5pm. All creators must arrive to set up their altar by 10am Saturday morning. The Altar contest winners will be announced on Saturday at 8:45pm. For more information about the Altar contest click here.
What better place to celebrate the Day of the Dead but a cemetery? The Hollywood Forever Cemetery is the only cemetery in Los Angeles and the country that opens its gates to celebrate “El Dia de Los Muertos” so don’t miss this one of a kind Halloween celebration.
