Want to learn more about the local art scene in Los Angeles? Art and music lovers alike should visit Subliminal Projects, a gallery in the historic city of Echo Park, for their latest event that is free to the public! From now until May 17th, you are invited to 50 Shades of Black, the latest project of Shepard Fairey – the artist responsible for the renowned portrait of Barack Obama with the message of ‘Hope’ underneath. Shepard Fairey fans who are planning on staying in hotels around the Hollywood area should not miss this inspiring event!

His latest installment combines his love of art and music by producing all his latest pieces in the 12-inch record cover format. 50 Shades of Black features 50 new hand painted designs all on this format. In addition to this, there will be a record store installation with some of Fairey’s own personal music collection on display. Those who attend can participate in the exhibition by selecting records from Fairey’s collection and playing them on the provided record player for the entire gallery to enjoy.

The artwork created in 50 Shades of Black is an artistic representation of Fairey’s love of both music and art. For him, music is an inspiring “…democratic medium that can bring joy while also delivering provocative and compelling social commentary.” His artwork seeks to demonstrate how infectious music can be in a visually compelling way. Additionally, Fairey touches upon certain social and political chords through his careful deliberation of which music personalities and movements he chooses to convey on each unique piece.

This is the third installment of pieces done in the 12-inch record cover format. Fairey, a DJ and artist, has been working on a way to combine his love of music and art since 2006. He presented these images for the first time in 2011 at the Robert Berman Gallery in Santa Monica, CA through an exhibition entitled, Revolutions. His second installment of these pieces was presented at Stolen Space Gallery in London, UK in 2012 as Sound and Vision. Don’t miss out on this great opportunity to see the latest work of the talented artist Shepard Fairey!

If music and art inspires you, you should definitely consider attending Shepard Fairey's 50 Shades of Black live performance available until May 17th.
