Celebrate Chinese New Year Festival in LA’s Chinatown District

Every year Los Angeles Chinatown celebrates Chinese New year and this year it will be the year of the Rabbit. The New Year is an important time in Asian culture and this tradition is carried into the streets of Los Angeles. The festival actually begins on Wednesday February 2nd’ from 11pm to 1am at the Thien Hau Temple. This is where offerings are made to the deities, firecrackers are set off to awaken spirits and incense is burned to bring good fortune for the New Year. There will be lion dancers, Buddhist and Taoist, and many others from the Chinese community participating in the midnight ceremony. The festival however goes into high gear this weekend, so come down and prepare to experience a unique blend of Chinese and Asian festivities.

Starting on Saturday, Feb 5th from 10 a.m to 8 p.m, the 112th Annual Golden Dragon parade will be showcasing over 100 floats, marching bands, performers, and costumed organizations that can be viewed from the streets of Broadway and Hill. As an attendee there will be many activities to partake in. There will be plenty of places to shop and eat all while taking in the ambience of the Chinese culture. Central plaza is one place you definitely will want to see while you are there. Central plaza will host some amazing performers including acrobats, performance troupes, contortionist and lion dancers. Central plaza will be having the LA Craft Experience market. This market will be home to over 40 unique vendors that will be selling original art, home accessories, collectibles, fashion and more. If you have kids and want them to experience something more hands on you will want to take them down to West Plaza. There will be cultural workshops as well as the Ping Pong Tourney where prizes where will given. If you like face painting and sculptures you need not worry artisans and dough sculptures will be stationed at both plazas.

On Sunday, Feb 6th, I know, I know that’s super bowl Sunday! Well for those of you who don’t care for the super bowl or would rather wait until Los Angeles has a football team then you’re in luck. “The Great Chinatown Hunt” will be waiting just for you. This is a hunt organized by Race/LA where teams of 2 to 4 players will have a total of three hours to solve clues leading them round Chinatown. If you can’t make it this weekend the festival will continue next week for the annual Los Angeles Chinatown Firecracker 5k/10k walk/run.
