January and February are Hollywood’s Awards season with the People’s Choice Awards, Golden Globes, Screen Actors’ Guild Awards, the Grammys and the Oscars. These awards ceremonies are held in several different locations in Los Angeles, including the Beverly Hilton Hotel, the Nokia Theatre, the Staples Center and the Kodak Theatre. In preparation for Oscar Night (February 26), many theaters in Hollywood are screening the nominees during the next two weeks. Read below for descriptions of Oscar related events happening this week in Hollywood!

This screening is sold out on Fandango, but there are still tickets on sale at the Box Office. The American Cinematheque is screening four of the Oscar nominated documentary shorts in a 130 minute presentation. Shorts that will be presented include “The Tsunami and the Cherry Blosson,” “Incident in New Baghdad,” “Saving Face” and “The Barber of Birmingham: Foot Soldier of the Civil Rights Movement.” General admission is $11, and $7 for Cinematheque members. The lounge in Premiere Events Calendar will include art, photography, sculpture, multimedia, installation, live video mixing and live painting. Fashion, jewelry, crafts, student art work, car art and an audio lab will also be on display. Couples and singles alike are invited to mingle from 9-10pm with a relationship consultant. If you love to travel, there’s an event this weekend that you can’t miss. The 14th Ann ual Los Angeles Times Travel Show will be held Saturday and Sunday, January 28-29, 2012 from 10am to 5pm at the Los Angeles Convention Center. Named one of the top 10 trade shows and conventions in BizBash’s Southern California Top 100 events list, the show will have a special travel trade day on Friday, January 27 from 9am to 6pm.
The 2012 Travel Show is full of informative and inspiring travel panels featuring today’s leading travel experts. All panels are a first-come, first-serve basis in terms of seating. Celebrity speakers include Lisa Ling, Arthur Frommer, Adam Richman, Johnny Jet, Catharine, Johnny Jet and many more. Hundreds of exhibitors, trip giveaways, cultural entertainment, and travel experts are other highlights of the show.
You’ll have access to SHOW ONLY specials and giveaways from wind surfing to wine tours, safaris to scuba diving and more. Pacific Standard Time: Art in LA 1945-80 is continuing in 2012 for 11 days in January. Over 25 public artworks and outdoor sculptures will be on display between Thursday, January 19 and Sunday, January 29. These collections are part of the Performance and Public Art Festival, featuring reinventions of art created and performed by Los Angeles artists post World War II.

Performances will premiere every day of the celebration, including experimental theater, sound art, social/political interventions, media art and outdoor visual spectacles. The celebration will include night after-parties, called Black Box, as a place for socializing and surprise performances. Organized by LA><ART and the Getty Foundation, the festival is a great lesson on the history of art in Southern California. The calendar allows time to visit performances and nearby exhibitions on each day.
The festival begins with two “Talks about Acts” events, on January 17 and 18. Artists Barbara T. Smith and Kim Jones will discuss their works in Los Angeles historical performance art in the 1970s on January 17 at LAXART at 7:30pm. On January 18, artist Ed Bereal will discuss the radical street theater group Bodacious Buggerrilla that was popular in the 1960s at the Getty Museum.These events are part of a series of conversations and performances called “Talks about Acts” on performance practices. Previous events have included Scoli Acosta, Ron Athey, Andrea Fraser, Coco Fusco, Lia Gangitano, Los Super Elegantes, Ann Magnuson, José Muñoz, Mario Ybarra, Jr., and Eleanor Antin. It’s a great week for good food and beer on Hollywood Boulevard in Los Angeles! On Thursday, January 12, the third annual Taste Award winners will be announced at the Egyptian Theatre on Hollywood Boulevard. Also known as the TASTY Awards, this is the premier broadcast awards show to celebrate the year’s achievements in food, fashion and home lifestyle programs on Television, Film, Online and on Radio. The awards recipients will receive their honors at this Red Carpet Hollywood event which will be broadcast on national television from 6:30pm to 8:30pm.
Finalist Nominees were selected between July 17th and August 25th of last year. Awards include Best Food or Drink Program on Television or Web, Best Food Travel Series, Best Fashion or Design Program, Best Reality Series, Best Home Décor and Design Program and much more. Lifetime Achievement Awards and other Special Awards will also be awarded to valuable contributors to the industry.
Food-based reality programming up for Best TV Food Programming honors include “Good Eats,” “No Reservations,” “Top Chef” and “The Science of Art and Cheese.” The Taste Awards will be hosted by Zane Lamprey of “Three Sheets” and “Drinking Made Easy.” Tickets are available here for $125.
Then on Saturday, January 14, celebrate the world’s best beers at the Bock Winter Beer Festival in at Vanguard LA on Hollywood Boulevard. The festival is from 1pm to 4pm and will host some of the world’s most unique brewers in Los Angeles for charity. Two beers will be crowned the Bock Fest Champion beer of the world, selected by beer experts, master brewers, brewery owners and beer drinkers like you!

The Japanese American National Museum (JAMN) is a great place to learn about American history from an alternate perspective. Every month, the museum puts on programs in addition to its exhibits that are free for museum members and free with admission for non-members. There are some great events in particular happening this weekend at the museum, which is easily accessible by the Gold Metro Line to Little Tokyo. Reservations are recommended as space may be limited.
Exhibition Tour, January 7, 2012, 1pm-2pm
Every first Saturday of the month, take a tour the exhibit Common Ground: The Heart of Community with JANM docents trained in 130 years of Japanese American history. The exhibit incorporates hundreds of objects, documents and photographs from this history, beginning with the early days of the Issei pioneers through World War II incarceration to the present. The Heart Mountain barracks is a highlight, as an original structure saved and preserved from a concentration camp in Wyoming.

Hito Hata: Raise the Banner, January 7, 2012, 2pm
The Los Angeles Filmforum and Visual Communications and the JANM will present a screening of Hito Hata: Raise the Banner, the first feature film produced by and about Asian Americans. Oda, an aging bachelor living in Little Tokyo chronicles stories from the Japanese American community from 1900 to 1970. Director Robert A. Nakamura will be present for a question and answer session after the screening. The screening will be at David Henry Hwang Theater, Union Center for the Arts, 120 Judge John Aiso Street, Los Angeles.
Graze Little Tokyo Walk, January 7, 10am-2pm
Little Tokyo is full of hidden food gems. This walk will provide opportunities to sample local Asian food from lotus root to pounded rice while learning about the history of Little Tokyo. The walk is $15 for JANM members and $20 for non-members, including admission to the museum. Wear comfortable walking shoes and get ready to tour the streets!

Oshogatsu Family Festival, January 8, 11am-5pm
Ring in the New Year of the Dragon! Arts and crafts, food, and cultural activities and performances will take place all day at the JANM. You can construct a dragon hat, streamer, origami dragon and help build a dragon by adding a paper handprint to the museum wall. Early in the day, you can learn how to make onigiri rice balls and enter a contest for prizes. There will also be a dragon jumper, a dragon candy artist and dragon-slaying game for kids. Wondering where to spend New Year’s Eve? What better place than Los Angeles? There are two affordable events easily accessible by Metro for partying responsibly! On Spring Street, the people that bring you Downtown LA Artwalk every month will be holding Downtown LA New Year’s Eve.

The block party will start at 6pm on Saturday, December 31 and ring in the New Year. Several thousand people are expected to walk through the event space this year. The event will feature a laser show, projections, live DJs and of course, a countdown to 2012. Best of all, entry to the event is completely FREE before 9pm. Late-comers will only have to pay a fee of $10.
VIP tickets are $25 with a small online fee. You can also purchase a VIP ticket in a Cabana with a complimentary Grey Goose Bottle to celebrate the New Year. If you split the bottle with 10 friends, its only $25 each!
The Metro Bus and Subway Rails will be running for free from 9pm to 2am on New Year’s Eve, so it is highly recommended that you take Metro to this event. Get off on the Pershing Square exit in downtown Los Angeles on the Red Line. After that, walk two blocks east to Spring Street and turn right onto Spring St. to find the event space. Parking lots in Downtown LA will be charging a lot this night, so take the bus if you can!
Universal CityWalk will be hosting Citywalk Rocks New Year’s Eve at Universal Studios. Admission is $15 per person, but children less than 48” are admitted for free. Music will be playing on three stages starting at 9pm. Ankhesenamen will kick off on the Universal Globe Stage, with Fast Times and a J Host at 5 Towers Concert Venue and Waterworld Arena, playing at 9:30pm. There will be a fireworks show at 12am. Universal Citywalk is home to many clubs and restaurants to entertain the whole family during this event, including Howl at the Moon, Jon Lovitz Comedy Club, and Wolfgang Puck La Bistro with a $40 four course celebration menu including champagne. Self parking to this event is $45, so taking Metro or the Hollywood Hotel complimentary shuttle is recommended!

It’s beginning to look like Christmas everywhere in Los Angeles! With decorations at the Grove, ice skating rinks in Santa Monica and Downtown LA and occasional weather below 70 degrees, the holidays are definitely underway. The Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in Downtown LA will be hosting the 52nd annual Los Angeles County Holiday Celebration on December 24. It’s a great event to celebrate music and the holiday season in Los Angeles!
Choirs, music ensembles and dance companies from the many cultures of Los Angeles will all come together to celebrate the holidays during this free three-hour event of the season. The diverse neighborhoods and cultures of Los Angeles and Southern California converge into a musical event for all to enjoy. The concert is funded as a gift to the public from the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors.

The entire three-hour performance will be broadcast on KCET public television live. It will also air on KCET.org, KPFK 90.7 FM and KPFK.org with repeat airings on KCET and KCET.org from 8pm to 11pm.
Admission and parking is completely free, but seats are limited. It is recommended that you arrive early or plan to wait in line for audience members to leave. Pre-show activities begin at 12:30pm for a celebration that lasts all afternoon! No wristbands, reservations or tickets are required to enter this year as guests can come and go throughout the show.
This celebration has been held every year by the Arts Commission since 1959 on Christmas Eve. More than 5000 people attend the program every year, and around a million Southern Californians catch the live broadcast at home. It is a vital part of Southern California’s holiday season that you can’t miss this year!

If you’re bringing the f amily to Los Angeles for the holidays, Universal Studios Hollywood is a must visit. Instead of Santa and the elves, the Grinch and his Who-ville take over Universal Studios. The occasion is Grinchmas, an event that occurs December 10-11 and daily from December 17 until January 1. The park will also open early from December 25 to January 1 (at 8am).
Grinchmas Winter W<onderland covers Universal Studios with blankets of real snow refreshed daily. Kids can make their very own snowmen! The Whos will also carol in the Backlot, and you’re invited to sign along! Every night of Grinchmas, celebrities such as Jeffrey Tambor, Dot Marie Jones and Florence Henderson read Dr. Suess’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas. Afterwards, the Grinchmas Tree is lit to spread the un-holiday spirit. Kids can also have their photo taken with The Grinch and Max! The Studio tour will also visit original sets from the movie “Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas” where characters will reenact scenes. Universal Studios is offering a special for Grinchmas season: buy one day for $77 and get a season pass for 2012 for free! Or if you’re interested in staying for a weekend, you can get a $75 ticket for 2 Days at Universal Studios.
Universal CityWalk will also be decked out with a 40 foot Christmas tree to celebrate the holidays. You can take photos with Rockin’ Santa and experience an all new light show on the brand new 5 Towers stage while finishing last minute shopping. The show occurs every 20 minutes from 6pm to 10pm. Restaurants and live entertainment such as DJ Dance Parities will also be available for a night of fun! The special Chanukah Celebration will occur December 20 from 6pm to 9pm. As always, live music will play all weekend, ranging from a capella to Latin, pop and rock and much more.
The Hollywood Hotel offers a free shuttle to Universal Studios as well as specials on park tickets. Hope you have a great holiday season in Los Angeles!
